Lower blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty corrects the fat pads and fine wrinkles under the eyes, softening the appearance of chronic fatigue. The intervention can be performed transconjunctivally or with a subciliary incision, depending on the indication. The results are visible and long-lasting, with a clear improvement in the quality of the skin around the eyes.

The ideal candidate

Lower blepharoplasty is suitable for people who want to correct the appearance of the pads or dark circles under the eyes, which give a tired or aged appearance. This procedure is recommended for those with lax skin, localized fat deposits, or fine wrinkles in the lower eyelid area.

  • Presence of evident pads under the eyes
  • Appearance of deep or puffy dark circles
  • Lax or wrinkled skin in the lower eyelid area
  • Good general state of health
  • Realistic expectations regarding the aesthetic result

The technique

The intervention involves the removal or repositioning of the fat in the lower eyelid area, as well as the correction of excess skin and the toning of the local musculature. The incisions are made either on the lash line or on the inside of the eyelid, to minimize visible scars. The procedure is individually adapted, depending on the type of changes present and the patient’s wishes.

Anesthesia and duration

Lower blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the case and the patient’s preferences. The duration of the intervention is on average 60 to 90 minutes.

Recovery

The first few days

Applying cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising is recommended. Moderate discomfort and a slight sensation of tension in the eye area may occur.

The first week

The swelling and bruising begin to decrease gradually. The sutures, if external, can be removed after approximately 5-7 days. Avoiding intense physical effort and sun exposure is recommended.

The first month

Most postoperative signs disappear, and the eye area takes on a more rested and rejuvenated appearance. Usual activities can be resumed gradually, with caution regarding exposure to irritating factors.

The final results become visible after approximately 3 months, when the tissues have fully recovered.

Risks and safety

  • Local infection
  • Hematoma or bleeding
  • Asymmetry of the eyelids
  • Temporary ocular dryness or irritation
  • Visible or hypertrophic scars
  • Temporary changes in skin sensitivity

All these risks are minimized through rigorous preoperative evaluation, precise surgical technique, and careful monitoring during the postoperative period.

Frequently asked questions

Is the lower blepharoplasty intervention painful?

The pain is generally minimal and can be managed effectively with prescribed analgesics. Most patients experience discomfort rather than intense pain.

How long does it take until I can return to daily activities?

Most patients return to usual activities in approximately 7-10 days, avoiding, however, intense physical effort and prolonged sun exposure in the first few weeks.

Will visible scars remain after lower blepharoplasty?

The incisions are placed so that the scars are as minimally visible as possible, either hidden on the lash line or on the inside of the eyelid, and they fade over time.

Can I also have other procedures at the same time as lower blepharoplasty?

Depending on the doctor’s recommendation and the patient’s general condition, lower blepharoplasty can be combined with other aesthetic interventions, but this aspect is discussed during the preoperative consultation.
